4th Grade

Language Arts
Results from the latest theme skills test were sent home. We finished reading A Very Important Day and took an AR test for it this week. We continue to read from our core literature book, Island of the Blue Dolphin. We have been working on responsding to the literature to strengthen our understanding of the story while we read and have been working on various other skills including figurative language and cause and effect.

Math
We have been working on multiplication starting with multiplication by a single digit and have now moved towards multiplying by double digits. Students will be shown a variety of different methods as we continue to practice this skill.

Science
We continue with our electricity unit. We started with the lab "lighting a bulb" and have moved on to building circuits and examining the different parts of a light bulb. Within the text, students have made a foldable for the first lesson where part of it was learning about conductors and insulators. Science test will be after the break.

Social Studies
We've been reading more about California's early history and in particular, early european explorers especially the Spanish.

5th Grade

Language Arts
We have launched the next theme, Voices of the Revolution where we are reading the story And Then What Happened Paul Revere? As we have read this story we have been working on a fact/opinion chart and we have learned more about author intent. We have been rotating amongst the fifth grade classes where we are focusing on different language arts skills including conclusions, themes, and vocabulary development.Rotations will continue this next week as well.

Math
We wrapped up our units on adding and subtracting mixed numbers and fractions. Next we worked with multiplying fractions and mixed numbers. Finally this past week, we have been working on dividing mixed numbers and fractions. We continue to write in our journals to help build understanding. In dividing fractions, students have been reminded to copy, multiply, and flip.

Science
We've been learning about matter and as part of that, about elements as well. Students are making foldables to help them further understand the content.  Ask them about the aluminum foil lab.

Social Studies
We've started chapter 3 in the social studies textbook where we are learning more about early european exploerrs. T help with understanding of this chapter, we are working on an explorers project where each fifth grader was assigned a particular explorer to find out more information about. After note taking, we will do some writing to put together our projects.
