Classroom Update 1/18/13

Note that the Spelling Bee is on 1/22 at 8:45 AM in the MUR.  Thanks to those students who are representing our class.  Good luck!
 
Fourth Grade
 
Math
Within math, we have continued to learn about the division process. We've stressed the importance of checking your work. We have continued to review the other operations including double digit multiplication. We have moved towards learning about divisibility rules as well as prime/composite numbersame for fourth graders, Work within stations has continued to reinforce what is learned within class including a new game, The Grapes of Math.
 
Writing
Our weekly writing prompts have started!  Thank you for working with your students on that first narrative writing prompt. Please remember to start with a planning page and to return that planning page along with the instructions when turning in the prompt. Be on the lookout towards the beginning of the week for returned writing prompt. We will continue to do some lessons within class to work on strengthening their writing. Ask them about the dialogue lesson with the tortoise and the hare.  This next week we will work on varied beginnings for their writing.  We continue to work with summaries which will be the next writing prompts following these first two narrative style prompts.
 
Language Arts
We have completed reading the remaining stories within this theme, That's Amazing.  This next week, students will be taking the theme skills test for this chapter. Results will be returned home with the students. Some of the grammar skills worked on with the students have included helping verbs indicating past tense, has & have as well as identifying the main verbs within a sentence (that one that shows the action). We continue with pagragraph corrections in the morning time along with our Bellworks books. We have also continued to read from our core literature book, Island of the Blue Dolphins together and have been working on some skills including sequencing and cause and effect as we work through the book.  We did work on a response to literature style question this past week where we wrote about whether Karana is actually alone on the island.
 
Accelerated Reader
Please continue to monitor your child's Accelerated Reader reading.  They should earn a total of at least 20 points each trimester with a percentage goal of 85% or greater.  Click on the resource tab on the class website and follow the instructions to log in to renaissance home connect. We will also attach a copy of their student record indicating their books read as well as point totals in the coming weeks.
 
Science
We have concluded our electricity unit with the students. Ech student made a quizboard where they were able to quiz each other to help review for the test. Quizboards will be on display during Open House where you too can test yourselves on this material. We have started our next chapter within this unit on magnetism. Ask your child about the sticks vs. does not stick lab that explored magnetism.
 
Social Studies
We continue to learn about the early part of California's history. Do remember that the Social Studies test is on Thursday, January 31.  Students did some an internet scavenger hunt to learn a little bit more about missions. We will be choosing a particular mission to learn more about and each child will e writing their own information report which will primarily be done within class.
 
Fifth Grade
 
Math
Within math, students had been working with multiplying decimals. Chapter 13 test was given and returned with students this past week. The next chapter has had the students working with division with decimals involved. We started by learning by dividing by a whole number. Next, we learned more about converting 4.85 divided by 0.5 to 48.5 by 5.  We continue to review those different concepts learned through the year.
 
Writing
Within writing, we have really stressed the importance of responding to literature. Within writing, we examined what it means to write a good response to a question. Biography report has been assigned and will be due February 7.

Some of the grammar skills worked on with students included adjectives including demonstrative adjectives (these, those) and proper adjectives as well.
 
 
Social Studies
Social studies chapter 3 tests were returned with students. We have started the first lesson within chapter 4.
 
Science
Do remember that the science chapter test will be on Thursday of this coming week, 1/24.
