Carnival is about a week away!  Thank you for all the families who have helped in so many ways to make the carnival a success. Be sure to visit our classroom cake, check out the wonderful gift baskets, find our fifth graders in the haunted house, and much more. Thanks again to everyone involved. We hope that you are able to attend on Sunday, 10/28. Parade starts at 11 AM towards the front of the school.

Fourth Grade

Language Arts
We took the first part of the theme skills test this week and will finish it towards the early part of this coming week. Results will be sent home at the end of the week.  I apologize for the delay to the original plan. The latest story that we read was By the Shores of Silver Lake. We did take an accelerated reader quiz on this story from our Houghton Mifflin series.

Math
Students continue to explore the relationship between multiplication and division while learning about multiplication and division rules. We learned more about arrays including rows and columns as we explored fact families. The latest chapter ended with a introductory lesson on division. The IXL assigned this week was a bit more difficult than I intended. Do give feedback to me when this happens as I can adjust the assignments accordingly.  The next chapters within math will work with operations that involve all four operations.

Writing
We continue to learn about different types of sentences including occasion and position statements. i.e. If I were a dog, I would...  When I got on the train, I first...   Earlier, we had also learned about the IVF method.  See if your child can remember what the I, V, and F stand for...  We developed some of these into paragraphs and shared our results. We continue to work on our Sacramento field trip writing for our memory books.

Science
Science study guides for the latest chapter will soon be given to students to use.  It is possible that they did receive them on Thursday of this past week. They should use these vocabulary and outline sheets to continue to help them learn the material. Within class, we have been making foldables (study guides) to help note take on the lessons within the chapter.

Social Studies
Social studies study guides and tests were returned this past week.

Fifth Grade

Language Arts
We read an autobiography about Michelle Kwan this past week. We will take the AR quiz on it this coming week.

Math
Students continue to learn more about the relationship between fractions and decimals. We have also working with adding and subtracting decimals both with like and unlike denominators. The importance of showing your work continues to be stressed to the students. Station work continues to help reinforce students knowledge about decimals. Ask students about Marcy Cook Tiles about decimal place value and what they have done.

Science
We continue to learn about the human body where lesson two focused on the digestive system.

Social Studies
Students have begun putting together their regions flipped books. There are some that are even finished!  They'll soon be on display in our classroom. We continue to learn about the states and capitals. The final states and capitals regions quiz will be for the Northeast. The following week, students will be tested on all fifty states and capitals. They will need to know the location of each state... and their capital. We continue to do some activities within class that work to reinforce students understanding including singing our states and capitals song!
